How To Swaddle Your Baby in Three Easy Steps

Swaddling is an effective soothing method for newborns and premature babies. The method has been proven to improve the sleep quality of babies during the day or night.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends swaddling for newborns as long as parents follow all the necessary, safe sleep guidelines. Learn to swaddle your baby safely by following these simple steps.

1. Lay Your Baby Down On A Flat Surface

There is no best time for swaddling, and you can do it any time during the day or night. Find a flat surface and lay a swaddle blanket down in a diamond shape. Fold down the top corner of the blanket, then place your baby’s head above the folded edge. It is best to make sure your baby is comfortable before folding them inside the swaddle.

2. Fold The Blanket Around Your Baby

Take the right corner of the blanket and wrap it around your baby’s torso under their chin. Lift the right arm and wrap the left corner over the left arm. The right arm should be free. Tuck the bottom corner of the blanket under your baby’s chin.

3. Secure The Swaddling Blanket

Finally, make sure that you do not fold the blanket too tightly. It should be snuggly, but not too snuggly. The swaddle should never be tied or fastened anywhere. If you fold correctly, it should keep everything securely in place. Remember to frequently check on your baby as they lay swaddled on their back.
